Does storing food in pots and pans in the refrigerator poison the food?

My mom used to always tell me to put left overs in a tupperware and place in the fridge. She said the if you put the pot or pan in the fridge to store the left overs, it would poison the food. My boyfriend does this all the time and I've always refused to eat the food. Well, now I'm sick and he made some chicken soup. He put the soup in the fridge, in the pot and gave me some for work today. I'm scared to eat it because of what Mom used to always say but I can't seem to find anything on the net about it. Has anyone heard of this? Is it true that refrigerated food in pots poisons you?

No that does not make you sick. I do that all the time.

Its best to not store in the pan longer than 24 hours but if he did the soup last night you aren't sick from the way it was stored.

I think the warning came about because pans were made of coarse metals and iron pots and that can leech into food.

Most pots now are stainless steel.

no it will not make you sick i do it all the time everyone does it and i have never heard of anyone getting sick from that people even leave food out on the stove in the pot all night and don't get sick but i don't eat that stuff because it wasn't put in the fridge as long as its in the fridge its fine pot or tupperware

The newer pans won't make you sick. They don't corrode as easily. However you should store food in plastic containers/tupperware to keep the refridgerator odor out of your food. Pan tops aren't tight enough to keep out the air. It can ruin the food. It won't make you sick but just tell him to start putting it in plastic ware. Good luck

No. But do not cook acid foods like apples or tomatoes in aluminum pots. The aluminum leaches out into the food and aluminum is found in the plaques in the brains of alzheimer's patients. I don't want to take any chances.

No. Although I wouldn't store tomato or acid-based foods in a metal pot, just b/c there may be a chemical reaction that makes it taste funny (but not kil you!).

I've NEVER heard of this!

I always store my food in the pots and pans I cook it in because I always lose my Tupperware tops! haha

Eat your soup!

Only if it's stored in aluminum. Stainless steel or enamel is ok.

i do not like to store food which is cooked always make it fresh..........or make in small quantities

Why do I get food poisoning from fast food places?

I eat a lot at fast food places and I've noticed that I get frequent food poisonings lately. In about 50% cases of eating there I get a diarreah the next day. In about 5% I throw up, have temperature and cannot eat anything for a few days - stomach flue? And it is the same for fast food and upscale restaurants. The only places I dont get a food poisoning is in my company's cafeteria (that has mostly fast food) and the best restaurants in Seattle, where I live?

Be careful where you eat. Some places do not enforce sanitary practices as much as other places. If one of the employees doesn't wash their hands after going to the bathroom, touching money, or pretty much touching anything other than food, the food you eat can become contaminated. Or, if one of the employees is sick already, and touches your food, it can make you sick, too. I work in the food service industry and I am very strict with my employees to make sure they wash their hands often. However, lazy managers who don't care or employees who don't care will cause problems.

Other than that, you may be eating too many fatty, greasy foods, and your body is sending you a message. Fast food is very unhealthy and you should only eat it once in a while if you really have to.

Or, simply, fast food is just gross. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070728235002AAdZKMN&kid=GMNdB3ToOVpujYENqPne&s=comm&date=2008-08-23+12%3A57%3A23&.crumb=

you probably can't take the extra grease http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070728235002AAdZKMN&kid=Bp5pLmTOCnkvgfAISMRI&s=comm&date=2009-01-01+10%3A28%3A59&.crumb=

i would say poor hygiene....i personally wouldnt go back again.

Funny you should mention this.

For many years, when I was younger, I preferred Burger King to McDonalds. I ate at BK alot, when I wanted a quick hamburger. No problems. (My diet other than that was very good.)

Now that I'm older, EVERY SINGLE TIME I eat a BK I get de shites the next day!!! :( Now, I never eat at BK anymore. I never got de shites from McDonalds, but that kinda food is no good. I have not been in a fast food place in YEARS!

~Cindy! :)

Fast Food restaraunts are generally safe. They throw more food in the trash than you could ever believe. The problem, judging from your question, is that you have a really bad diet. You need to eat at home more often. If you will just eat food that you prepared at home you will not experience this sickness that you are getting from Fast Food. Your really cheating yourself by not eating at home on so many levels. First, there is the cost. Then, the obvious sickness your getting from eating out too much. Dude, go to the grocery store, start with the Shells and Cheese and build on that. your gonna die at 39 eating out.

weeeelllll diarreah isnt very fun, even in ur fast food u eat.... soo u should eat "normal" not food poisining food because if u dont want the process to start over u should but some times u can get poisned from ppl i think they might just hate u but i dont know because im not in the fast food bizz. Switch To Jenny Craig..

God Bless

You should probably see your doctor and maybe have him refer you to an Allergist. You might have food allergies. If you keep a record of where you eat and what you eat the doctor may find out why you get sick. If it were me I would want to know so that I could avoid those foods. Food allergies can be real serious. See a doctor.

cause so many people eat there as well as kids that cary alot of germs plus the places you eat at must be dirty there could also be a prob with your tummy see your dr.

Fast food is never good to eat frequently and shouldn't be your primary diet. Your body is trying to tell you that your poisoning it, try eating healthier. It can also be how your food is being prepared and how long they are leaving it out.

b/c its unhealthy junk food. stop eating it

Have you ever seen the movie "Fast Food Nation"? Could explain a lot.

What food should I use for urinary problems for a male cat?

My cat Lionel is ten years old and still active. However he has had reoccurring urinary tract problems. I recently took him to the vet and they gave me a cat food (Prescription Diet C/D) which Lionel is supposed to eat for the rest of his life. (It has low magnesium).

My problem is that the food is very expensive and I have to go to the vet everytime to get it.

Is there another kind of dry cat food that is available? I heard that Nutro is a good brand. Also, I would like suggestions on any alternatives beside the dry food.

I can ask my vet these questions but I would like to have a 2nd (and 3rd, 4th etc) opinions from Yahoo answers.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the world of urinary problems in cats. My cat just had a stone the size of a nickel removed so I know what you are going through....I hope. Anyway my doctor also gave me c/d for him but she also said that since it is sooooo expensive that I could give him purina urinary tract health for it and that would be ok. I hope this answers your question but I do know that for sure. As for other kinds I hope to read your answer and see what you are going to do.

you can buy a special food at wallmart for a cat with urinary tract infection, alot cheaper, but good ,your cats need a lot of water, you can also give your cat oceanspray cranberry juice, if he dont like it ,put in in a baby surringe and put it in his mouth, also put a little chicken broth over his cat food, you can alsp but cran actin at walmart to help your friend. I hope this helps

what country are you in?? if in Canada - NUTRAM is the best - having the lowest amount of Magnesium...

Hills Precription diet is a scam - over priced - low quality..

go to pet food supply store and compare lables..

Nutro ISNT much better.. only slightly less costly -

Hills PAID for vet endorsement..

also feed him 1 teaspoon canned food twice a day mixed with water to make soup to increase his water intake which will help too... (not fish canned - fish is bad for cats with UTI's)

Yes indeedy!

Scrap the overpriced, low quality prescription food. Technically it may work but it is not good quality food and I would never feed it and never feed it long-term.

Probably all you will need to do is feed him canned food. Good canned food, not the stuff you buy at the grocery store. Although some of the premium foods may be more expensive than the grocery store brands, that's not a hard and fast rule. Plus if you choose one sold at a chain store, you may be able to get a little discount thingy. And if you buy in bulk that can help too.

They WILL be less expensive than your SD.

Check out the What to feed link. You can go to their site and find where they're sold in your area.

Below is from my blog:

This is not my area of expertise, but this has been my experience: As a kitten, Poppy developed both a weight problem and a UTI. My vet told me to start feeding her special food which he happily sold me *gulp*. Poppy refused to eat it. Back then I was less aware of how to get cats to eat new foods, so I just said the hell with it and bought Purina's urinary health food, mixed with weight management. She ate that from then until she was 2 years old. She never had another UTI, so that tells me that the overpriced CRAP the vets sell you are typically unnecessary. The grocery store crap is just as good.

For various reasons, I soon thereafter began researching cat nutrition. I learned about the benefits of wet food, and found that in many cases, that's all that's required to prevent future UTI's. Even the crappy brands like Friskies would be better than dry food!

I don't claim to be a vet, vet tech, vet student or anything like that. But I know how to research and examine results. I've read a bit on this topic which is how I've reached the conclusions I have.

At the very least, were I to have another cat with urinary problems, I'd sooner try them on a GOOD QUALITY canned food before shelling out the dough for a "prescription" dry food (or even their canned varieties). That's because I believe that good nutrition and species appropriate food is much more likely to keep a cat healthy than something designed to change their chemical composition.

It is my opinion, based upon experience and research, that dry food is the WORST food you can feed a cat with a propensity towards developing urinary tract problems.

The best food for your cat is moist, canned food.

I am presently fostering 3 cats, all siblings. When Bobby, the gray tuxedo cat, was brought to me, I was told that he would form crystals in his urine, and therefore was to eat only Hills c/d kibble.

Bobby developed horrible diarrhea and gas as a result. He wouldn't eat the moist, canned c/d, so after doing a lot of research on the web, I decided to take him off the dry kibble, and to feed him only moist, canned food.

In two days, he had no gas and no diarrhea after I changed his diet.

We all have such trust and faith in our vets, however, they do NOT know everything! And sometimes their advice is wrong!

When I was feeding all 3 of my cats dry kibble, they all developed crystals in their urine. Once I removed the dry kibble from their diets, the crystals went away. So I have been feeding them wet food ever since, and the kitties have not had any urinary tract problems since.

I also have to give my cat the same prescription food you do. I know it's a little expensive and a pain to get it from the vet every time. What I wanted to tell you was that I switched from cat litter to shredded newspaper in his litter box. The dust from the cat litter was contributing to his urinary problems. You will have to change the litter at least every other day but there will be no more dust or cat litter all over the floor.

HI!! Dry food is the very worst for your cat. Think if you have a UTI you are told to DRINK lots. Your cat should be drinking lots. Well cats don't have a high thrist signal. They can dehydrate sitting in front of a bowl of water So you give a cat dry that has 95% of it's water removed. It is like telling you with a UTI to drink a 1/4 glass of water a day. I am going to give you my food talk here. Please check the links I think, no I know in fact Lionel will be happier, healthier, you will be surprised how much younger a cat acts when on a species appropriate diet and how much better their fur will be and no dander!!! Good luck here is my diet talk for ALL cats.

Feeding a cat a healthy diet is of the utmost importance for the good health of every cat.

Many people feel that dry is the best way to go. Vets feel it is the way to go. Why? Vets are taught very little about nutrition and they are taught what they know by the Pet Food Companies. The companies push dry as it is the very cheapest food in the world to make as they use fillers, vegetable protein and things that cats do not eat in normal life like veggies and fruits. Of course the veggies and fruits are NOT good for human consumption and thus they get it free or for pennies so the big suppliers can get rid of it.

Dry does not keep teeth clean. A cats jaw is made to grab, tear and shred. They have no chewing action. When a cat barfs he throws up the chunks of food. Sometimes the dry shatters but that doesn't rub on the teeth either. A vet told me that she had an elderly cat around 20 who had had wet food her whole life and never had a problem with her teeth, but she had a 7 month old kitten who had to have every tooth pulled since they were so bad he was sick.

Dry food causes diabetes, UTI's, Kidney problems and the list is to long to continue.

The proper food is a diet for an obligate carnivore. Remember you have never seen a lion chasing a biscuit. Your cat needs wet food of good quality. It should be high in protein and under 10% carb. You should not feed your cat fish or seafood more than 1 or 2 meals a week if that much as they become addicted to it and it is high in phosphorous and low in nutritional value.

http://www.geocities.com/jmpeerson/canfood.html

Here is a chart of most wet foods. The good and the bad. Look for one that is high in protein and low in carbs. Fancy feast is a good middle of the road one, and the cheaper brands but, still following the rule are much better than any dry ever could be. If cost is a problem go with the Friskies etc that is what my girl eats here in Sweden. FF is over $1 a small cat. Wellness and Merrick are on the higher end with higher cost. But you have good food.

It is cheaper to feed a cat the wet as they are filled up faster. Think if you are hungry and eat a bag of potato chips you are soon hungry but if you have a nice piece of chicken you are filled up longer. The same for a cat. I began adding small amount of water and mixing it in good for the meals and now add 1/4 cup water to 1/3 cup wet food. It is now like soup. It keeps the food from drying out and Cessan eats when she wants. She is a grazer and I let her be happy. She gained the weight she needed and then the weight gain stopped. If your cat is over weight he will lose weight on a wet diet.

Here is a link explaining very clearly cat nutrition and care. It is excellent and I think every new cat owner should have to read it first.

Good luck and be good to your sweet kitty. Contact me if you have further questions.

My mom gives her cat dandelion tincter(sp?) and that is supposed to help. It doesn't just help cure, it helps prevent, so give to cat on a regular basis.

Try the Senior formula Iams , i used it for all my male cats and female because of urinary tract problems, it really works, I've also made sure i started giving more meat scraps, most cats love chicken livers or chicken, just boil it. We had one cat that lived to be 17yrs old and stayed in good health once her diet was changed , another who lived to be 19yrs old and they both suffered from the urinary problem when they were younger. I know its worse for the male cats but this works great. Good luck and give your cat a rub for me.

They have other brands of cat food that are low in Mag. I dont like using Iams anymore after I saw a video of how they treat their animals in the testing labs.. its cruel and just wrong. Nutro is a good brand, so is Eukanuba

Please be very careful with Lionel. Male cats can get blockages very easily and will die within 24 hours from a bad blockage. I am a cat rescuer, trust me, I've seen it.

I rescued one male cat from a house where they'd been told to keep him on Prescription Diet C/D and they didn't feed it to him. He blocked up, his bladder burst, the urine seeped into all the tissues in his lower body, and my job was to take him to the vet (in terrible pain) and have them euthanize him. I was horrified at his condition and it was all about his food.

Shop around, maybe different vets will give you a discount. Mine does. Also, maybe buy two bags at a time instead of one. It will keep a year. Your kitty will do much better on it.

There is ONE (and only one) type of canned cat food I could recommend for a male kitty with UTI, and that's the canned Instinctive Choice by HealthyPetNet. I had a cat with kidney cancer and he thrived on it. Use it IN ADDITION to the special Prescription Diet. It has ingredients that help acidify the cat's urine and it's also very liquid, which helps his kidneys function better.

And honey, honestly, save a dollar or two per week somehow and be prepared for another trip to the vet. This kitty will need future visits (hopefully, not many) and you just don't want this well-loved, beautiful 10-year-old guy to suffer. Any cat that has lived 10 years has great owners, God bless you!

How do I conduct a food bank at a high school in California?

I'm a senior, and for my senior project I am putting together a food bank. The food collected is donated food from other students, and the remains of the cafeteria food. It is all packaged, so there's no worry. The food is to to go the needy students, of this campus. However, keeping every individual under consideration, how do I go about this food bank without offending any of the students? I'm sure a few would like to remain anonymous, because they'd be too embarrassed to publicize their necessity for food. So, how do I make it anonymous? Any tips, or ideas?

To be honest, I'm not sure you can. Once you publicize the food bank as being available, you almost certainly have to have someone supervising the room containing all the food to be sure no one trashes the place or contaminates the food. If just one person is in charge, that's probably about the closest you can get to anonymity. The other option would be to offer the food online (using the high school computers) and the needy student could indicate an address for it to be shipped (the student could use his own home, a relative's, or a friend's place)... bottom line... you really wouldn't know who would benefit in this case.

Instead of having students come pick it up themselves, send a letter home to parents and invite them to come pick up food.

If they pick it up from an adult, then nobody will ever know who came and got food.

What is the best food for my kitten with diarrhea?

My 16-week old kitten has been checked for worms 3 times within 2 weeks and all tests have been negative. She was on flagyl and probiotic and is done with that. Her food consisted of Merrick wet food and Wellness Dry food. I keep a water fountain clean and full at all times. She does not eat table scraps or get milk. She is not dehydrated and is gaining weight at a healthy pace. The only symptom is very loose stool or diarrhea. And until today, she was only pooping two or three times a day. Today she pooped twice between 6:30 and 7:00 am.

Assuming it is her diet, which seems the most logical at this point, what are your thoughts on foods that claim to be nutritionally balanced for all life stages? What are your suggestions for brands of foods that do not have by-products, wheat or corn? I understand the Wellness may be contributing since it is an adult food, but I didn't realize that until yesterday. I thought it was for all life stages. I want her to have the best food available.

youre feeding her good brands! Good job!. maybe stay away from the wet food. And get her a kitten dry. Innova is good or natura pet (same thing) Im not sure they have a kitten food.

You can go to their website http://www.naturapet.com/ and find a store in your area that carries their brand. And if that pet store carries this brand, then they typically only deal with the best food products and they might also have some suggestions for you.

I checked the website they have evo kitten dry which is good, but youre using a great food although Im not fan of wellness because i found a piece of plastic embedded in my dogs wellness ddry, i stopped buying them and went to innova evo

Science diet was on the bad food list, Innova was not. That guy is WRONG

I have heard chicken and rice works. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20070430122651AAkG3lE&kid=Isd3Xm_rGEMyhyQ6dG_X&s=comm&date=2008-06-25+16%3A23%3A11&.crumb=

i worked for Nutro/ Natural Choice dog/cat food, and i honestly do think that that is the best brand of pet food for your animal. They dont use chicken by-products(they use chicken meal, which is the part of the chicken that you or i would eat with all the moisture taken out), or Corn (they use corn meal so its easily digestible, and its uses more of the protein so theres less watse) , they also have Chicory Extract, Cranberry Powder which helps with teeths and bad breath. if you do switch them over by splitting their food up by doin 25% of their usual food and 75% of old for 2-3 days then do 50-50 for 2 or 3 days and then 75% new 25% old for 2 or 3 days, and fianlly you can use just the new food, that will make their transition to their new food, easier on their insides and for you. :) If you have any questions let me know : )

is she a female? because if she is there is allways a time when female kittins to have it. the best food to give her is what usually give ur kittin, and give her/him kittin biscits. if u want u can take ur kittin to the vet.

Anything with chicken and rice. Maybe Iams?

Here, check this out:

http://www.catinfo.org

The vet who developed this site got started in her research when she was looking for a solution for one of her kitty's chronic diarrhea, and she tells what she learned.

You'll also find a lot of information about specific foods. On the sidebar menu check out Commercial Caned Food Choices.

If this condition has gone on for two to three days, your cat is at risk for dehydration and needs to be veterinarian checked.

Home first aid would be to give her a couple of tablespoons of cottage cheese daily for three days and get off the Yuppie Cat foods please as even some of their top brands are on the poison list. Take her off the wet foods for awhile as they may be contributing to stool liquidity. Try Science Diet Growth for kittens if they have it in dry for the next couiple of months. You get major points for daily if not twice daily water change and be very wary of wet food for a couple of months. Three times a week should be your max on that after she delivers more "solid" reports.

I asked my vet what food I should feed my cat. She said she feeds her pets Innova. All human quality ingredients. I was feeding my cat Blue Buffalo, as they were supposed to be like that, but they found out their manufacturer was lying to them and putting rice protein (instead of whole rice) in their canned foods, and it turned out it was one of the brands recalled :(

I'm going to try to find Innova for my cat. If it's good enough for my vet it's good enough for me :) My vet is excellent.

As to the diarrhea... Are you giving your kitten milk? Most cats can't digest milk. They're extremely lactose intolerant.

your kitten sounds like its getting the best of care food wise, the loose stool an diarea is just her system doing a little fine tuning your vet probably said just to watch her stools an it may be a slight reaction to the medications (just a healthy guess) hope she gets a clean bill of health good luck to you an kitty

Hi

You can try a bit of acidouphoulous which is available at health stores.

Note. Wellness is a good quality food but their dry is not good and cats are much better off on a low carb canned food diet
